Edward had waited with bated breath for a long time for that crown to be his. He was 60 when his mother, Queen Victoria, passed away after having reigned for 63 years.

During Queen Victoria's time, smoking wasn't permitted when royals were present. We can only guess that Edward had to hide and smoke in secrecy but finally brought out the smoking paraphernalia after the dinner service at his home at Buckingham Palace.
